Description

Frans Zwartjes (1927-2017) was a Dutch artist, filmmaker and musician, called ‘the most important experimental filmmaker of his generation’ by Susan Sontag.

Lodewijk de Boer (1937-2004) regularly appeared in Zwartjes’ work, and almost always performed on or co-composed the soundtracks to his films. De Boer would go on to compose original scores for the likes of Marleen Gorris and Pim de la Parra, but is best known in his native Holland as a theatre director.

Inspired by the completely unique system of sound which provided half of the life to Zwartjes’ very whole films, purge.xxx’s Schtinter set out in 2012 or 2013 or something to find Zwartjes and facilitate the release of his music. Ultimately, purge.xxx was founded to share the work of Zwartjes. Our first album was produced on cassette in an edition of 50 copies, and later reissued by Trunk Records as ‘Tapes 1’. It is only fitting therefore that our first catalogued record should be by Zwartjes…

MASTERPIECE / SPECTATOR is released in an edition of 500 hand-numbered + handmade copies and there will never ever be a repress. The record is produced on 180 gram vinyl, with two custom inners and a screen-printed plastic outer (sealed). Each copy comes with a double-sided riso print of Zwartjes by Zwartjes at work, along-with a separate insert featuring an original text on Zwartjes by Schtinter.
