“Charles Amirkhanian talks to Tom Marioni, founder of the Museum of Conceptual Art in San Francisco, and artist Dennis Oppenheim about the show Body Works which was to open at the museum shortly after the interview on 18 October 1970. The show was to include video works by Vito Acconci, Terry Fox, Bruce Nauman, Dennis Oppenheim, Keith Sonnier and William Wegman, all of them sculptors involved in body art. Oppenheim describes his work Hair Piece which was to be exhibited in the show and talks about other body art pieces of his, such as Deformity. Furthermore, Oppenheim describes his artistic evolution from painting to sculpting and from there to conceptual art and video and film.

In his artistic practice Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011) explored and questioned the very nature of art, the process of making art and the social, economical and political contexts that define works of art. His works span all sorts of disciplines, ranging from sculptures, land art, body art, videos and films to machineworks and post-performance pieces. Oppenheim was born in Electric City, Washington and attended the California College of Arts and Crafts before moving to Honolulu, where he taught at the University of Hawaii. Oppenheim and his family moved to New York in 1966, where he taught art at various schools and had his first solo exhibition in 1968. He married four times and lived and worked in Lower Manhattan until his death in 2011.”
