“The combos of the 80s were characterized by a contrapuntal way of thinking, multiple voices that yield manifold rhythmic patterns and variegated sounds, by the quotation of a global repertoire of music, and by their approaches to the occasional simple repetition of theme and gesture: R-Korsakov, English folk songs, the use of sprechgesang.
A so-called postmodern made its presence felt: stock phrases, the application of varying stylistics, the frequent switching of instruments. Reproduced by the drums as an echo, the repetitive beginning phase of Rimski-Korsakov’s woodwind quintet seems like an angelic salutation from faraway times, falling from the clouds—the way to expressivity through musical diversity and a contrapuntal attitude toward playing instead of instrumental loudness and virtuosity.”
